I think Oteri filled the kind of role I am describing more than Shannon, though of course these are a lot of other women, bad and good, who have left their mark on SNL other than in this kind of role. Your point about the Welk sketch needs to be underlined. Everytime I see that I feel cheated that we are not getting to see them really develop it on its own terms - which is often promising and sometimes dynamite. Instead it all gets sacrificed for a aggressively unfunny Wiig character that has no redeeming quality whatsoever.
