Even though I don't think the metric is a valid indicator of these
performers, at least it provides a common ruler for evaluating those in the
same category, like late night hosts. For some reason the NBC Late Night
hosts were not included in the LAT's sample. Thanks to Brad we now have
Leno's number. It was hard to find Fallon's salary - Forbes did not seem to
list him. Foxbusiness.com reports that he makes $5M/year (
http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2012/04/04/highest-paid-hosts-on-late-night-tv/).
I am going to use 1.6M as Fallon's total viwership (
http://www.thefutoncritic.com/ratings/2012/06/28/jay-leno-and-jimmy-fallon-deliver-number-1-finishes-for-the-second-quarter-of-2012-vs-the-abc-and-cbs-time-slot-competition-118110/20120628nbc04/)
but this might be a little high. 5/1.6 = 3.13. Also missing from the list
is Conan. Celebrity Net Worth reports his salary to be $10M/year (
http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/richest-comedians/conan-obrien-net-worth/),
the LAT reported that Conan was getting 1.1 total viewers last February (
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2012/02/conan-obrien-tbs-renewal-shows-power-of-team-coco.html),
so I will use that. 10/1.1 = 9.09, so that is his number. That gives the
following rankings for 9 Late Night Hosts (have I forgotten anyone?):

1. Handler: 16.7
2. Letterman: 9.69
3. O'Brien: 9.09
4. Leno: 8.56
5. Stewart: 8.24
6. Ferguson: 5.67
7. Colbert: 3.75
8. Kimmel: 3.33
9. Fallon: 3.13

The median for this group if $8.24. Letterman, O'Brien, Leno and Stewart
all seem to be broadly around the same level ($9.69 to $8.24/viewer) -
though of course Stewart (like Colbert below him) is getting paid for only
30 minutes per show, 4 shows per week, or 2 hours of programming/week vs
the 5 hours/week the other guys produce (I am not sure if Handler is 30 or
60 minutes). Handler does seem to be an order of magnitude higher than they
guys, with Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon being real bargains.

Kimmel seems to be the biggest bargain of the whole group, getting paid
only 20 cents more per viewer than Fallon even though half of his show is
30 minutes earlier, and presumably charging more in commercials (which,
BTW, seems like the better unit here - how much is each of these guys being
paid per dollar of add revenue they generate per week?).
