I have had some very spirited debates about guns on Facebook today as the events unfolded. Where I draw the line are those who have said now is not the time for those debates and that we should wait. These were undoubtedly the same people who were critical of Costas for speaking out. As I have said a few times today, regardless of whether you feel it was appropriate for Bob to speak about guns during a halftime show, imagine if both sides had been willing and a substantive debate on the issue took place, then imagine if the politicians took notice of the public interest and, going whichever way the wind blows, they rapidly pushed through some reforms. Yeah, I know, sadly the body count would still be the same today, but at least other nations wouldn't be quite so rightly condescending towards America today. I follow a lot of Brits on Twitter and they have collectively ripped the US a new a-hole. Had somebody said, "Hey, Costas raised some issues and we ought to tinker with some new thoughts and ideas about guns," other nations might have at least given us credit for trying. Instead, the collective reasoning seems to be that the 2nd Amendment was responsible for the death of 20 children today, and there isn't really an effective counterargument to that. -- Kevin M.
