Let me preface this by saying I generally like Ferguson and his show,
despite the fact that I almost never watch it.

That said, I don't think he can do an "11:30" show. To me, that implies a
short monologue, desk pieces or sketches, contentless interview panels, and
(inevitably) a band no one wants to hear. Craig's strengths are the
monologue and conversations with people he really seems to want to talk to
(I'm sure there are exceptions, but I don't watch the show enough to know).
Granted, he's done the Aquaman and Prince Charles stuff, but those seem to
have dropped by the wayside in recent months. I get the feeling he's
perfectly happy with 12:35 and would stay there -- and I would further
think that Bill Carter may have been right in predicting that Colbert would
move to a network and do a traditional talk show. He seems better suited to
it than Stewart, and I'd guess he'd like to drop the "Colbert" character
one day.
