So this leads to another oddball situation. The contestants are
sequestered for the quarters so they don't know what the non-winning
scores were. But they're not sequestered for the semis. This meant that
the contestants in the third semi (a) knew that they were playing with a
wild-card spot in play and (b) knew what the score to beat was because
they watched the first game. I wonder if that'll change for future
tournaments.
I've deleted the program off my TiVo, but I'm pretty sure Alex mentioned the
triple goose-egg that had happened on the previous show, and the rules going
forward. And in the first semifinal, only one contestant got it right and
finished with 28,001. The other two contestants finished at 100 and 0.
With those tidbits of information, at the very least the third set of
semifinalists knew not to shoot the entire wad in Final. As it happened, all
three got the Final correct and finished with healthy five-digit scores.
In the nearly 30-year run of this iteration of "Jeopardy!", this is the
first time a triple goose-egg occurred in a semifinal -- such events in a QF
simply resulted in an extra wild-card entry -- and apparently there were
contingencies in place for a SF incident.
I'd see no need to tweak anything, if for no other reason than the
contestant coordinators will have an extra talking point in the pre-semi
briefing.
(Can anybody recall a three-way tie going into Final?)
