I am currently reading That's Not Funny, That's Sick, a history of the National Lampoon by Ellin Stein (I will write a review/recommendation here after I finish). There was a lot of overlap between the Lampoon radio show, records, and theatrical casts and the early cast of SNL. One thing Chevy Chase said about being the breakout star of the first season of SNL is that the Weekend Update anchor gives his/her name to the audience and works directly to the camera and that makes the anchor stand out from other cast members. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
