Subject : RE: Re: [TV orNotTV] Some New Yorkers still don't get it

This reminds me of a little story:

One morning in 1995 I woke up, looked outside (I'm on the 2nd floor in a NYC
apartment building), and saw all sorts of activity: there were fire trucks,
police cars, and a lot of bodies spread out on the street, their faces covered
with cloth. Also, the air was filled with smoke.

What alarmed me was that I wasn't awakened by the approaching sirens. I found
that odd. And that folks were just milling about, no panic or interest in the
carnage that surrounded them.

Then noticed that one of the fire trucks had a ladder go up to the top
7th-floor window of the corner building across the street. But there was no
activity by the window, and, indeed, there were two people positioned on the
roof above.

Then saw a woman exit the lobby of that building, holding a clipboard. Followed
her down the street, where I saw one of them huge film vans. That's when it all
clicked. The basement walkway at the corner building (with the firetruck
ladder) had been converted to a subway stop.

And the air turned out not to be filled with smoke: it was just extremely foggy
that morning.

Law and Order, Season 6 Episode 13: "Charm City" -- Prologue Scene. There are
some B-roll shots of my window. Had I known in time, I would have mooned them.

Filming, no matter how loud or pyrotechnic it may get, isn't an emergency. Only
when a screwup, one of which was mentioned in the piece, happens do the regular
authorities step in.

The city can only do so much to notify people of what's going on. It doesn't
help that there can be significant turnover in terms of who's living / working
nearby.

The larger point here, is that the blinkin' Post, home of, f'rinstance, Page
Six, is making a rather large point of this.
