The problem is, you can't just declare that you're not a public figure, and that causes a different set of rules to kick in.  Baldwin's not a public figure because at one time he said he was, back near the beginning of his career.  He became a public figure by becoming an actor, appearing in movies and on TV, and attending actor functions and ceremonies.

I don't know the exact legal precedents involved, but I strongly doubt that Alec can just *say* "I'm not a public figure"...he has to not *do* the things that make him a public figure.  Like appearing in productions designed to entertain the "public."  Members of the entertainment industry are pretty much public figures by definition.

Well, if he's not a public figure, he's got a lot more legal protection. Paparazzi can be sent to jail and even prosecuted criminally for doing the same stuff to a private figure that they do to a celebrity.
I'm willing to bet money that Baldwin can't keep his mouth shut and stay a private person.

I thought he was announcing he was no longer a public figure so paparazzi couldn't hound him.

I'm not sure where you're reading "quitting the biz" in that article.  Baldwin's merely voicing his frustration with the way he's been treated in the media over the years, and noting that it appears to be getting worse, rather than better.  He sounds like he's making plans to disengage from the public life he's maintained over the years, out of a newfound sense of responsibility to his wife and child.

I don't see that as quitting the biz, and I expect to see Baldwin continue appearing in movies, TV and plays for some time to come.  I just see it as him making a choice he probably should've made years ago.
