The easiest way for Baldwin to get the media to stop calling him homophobic would be for him to stop using gay slurs. And while my bias against all things Baldwin is on record, I get annoyed when any celebrity blames paparazzi for media sh*tstorms. Go to the Ralph's grocery store on Santa Monica Blvd any time of day and you are likely to find an actor or a singer who made $20 million or more in 2013. But as many times as I've been there, I've never seen paparazzi hounding these very known, very famous people. If you are famous, there are coffee shops and bars where you know you will make a scene, but ten times as many coffee shops and bars where you can slip in and out without incident. If a celebrity wants to avoid the prying eyes of the public, it is quite easy and done by 99% of famous people on a daily basis. Paparazzi don't follow you unless they believe you're going to make a scene. Yes, sometimes they can confront celebrities and go to far, and none of them are journalists in any way, but those would seem to be the exceptions. The rule of celebrity is to choose where to be seen and when, and to be conscious of your words and actions. Baldwin chooses to not play by those rules, as he is free to do so, but it does open the door to public scrutiny.
What Baldwin seemed to be lamenting in his... it wasn't an editorial... more like a public bitch session... was the loss of the sort of public life enjoyed by people 30 years ago. I'd like the gas prices of 30 years ago, but I live in the present so too bad for me. As Doug just pointed out, there is more to quitting public life than merely declaring you have quit public life. Make a film, appear on Broadway, do a cameo on SNL, and you're a public figure. Baldwin wants to be famous without all the hassle of fame, which is a disjointed concept to me. Here's a tip for Mr. Baldwin: If you want to avoid the public spotlight, don't move to LA or live in NYC. You know those "flyover states" you never hear about in the press... there's no press there... move away and the world will forget you.
