I don't think we ever really got to see Conan's 11:35 Tonight Show - it was
just finding its footing when it got the carpet pulled from underneath it.
But I think this idea as applied to Dave has always gotten it backwards. It
was not that he could not do his 12:35 show at 11:35; rather, it was that
he could not do an 11:35 show at 12:35. He had gotten older, and felt
undignified doing a show for college kids (and those who still had the
sensibilities of college kids) when he was 47. I don't think he was ashamed
of his early work, he just wanted to get old gracefully.

Fallon (and I am only a sampler too, of both his 12:35 and 11:35 shows) is
starting his 11:35 show 8 years younger than Dave was. The relevant
comparison will not be Fallon at 11:35 with Fallon at 12:35, but Fallon at
39 with Fallon at 49. Check back in 10 years and Fallon joking with
Timberlake will seem more like Carson with Sinatra than the two guys who
sang about di*ks in a box (or was that dic*s in a box?).
