If Les had not been thinking hard about who would replace Dave when his
contract was up next year he would have been an idiot. If Dave had resigned
for 2 or 3 more years after his current contract expired it would have been
very unusual. We have seen zero evidence that CBS in any way pressured or
even wanted Dave to not extend.

I think it is much more likely that when Dave signed his last extension he
told Les something like "let's see how I am feeling when this one is over,
but let's face it, this will probably be my last contract". And Les
probably told Dave something like: "We want you behind that desk as long as
you want to be there, but given that you will probably retire in 2015, I
will start thinking about and planning for your replacement. Give me a
head's up when you are sure and I will get ready for a smooth transition".
I also think it is likely that when Dave called Les and told him this was
it, Les probably said "We are thinking of going with Colbert, what do you
think?" and Dave said "Good thinking, he's going to do great!!"
