I watched season one of Maverick on DVD last year, and I've been working my
way through season two for a few weeks now. I think Jack Kelly was
underrated, but when you watch their episodes back to back, it's easy to
see why Garner became a big star and Kelly didn't. Kelly was much more
experienced - he'd been a child actor on Broadway, while Garner had only
been acting for a few years - but you could sometimes see the effort Kelly
put into the role. With Garner, the effort never showed.

As someone who grew up with Rockford on Friday nights, it's been wonderful
to see how good he was from the very beginning. Never a false moment. And
that's the mark of a great actor.
