The trends I have been seeing for late night are a drop in viewers and a drop in revenues. Both Leno's Tonight Show and Letterman's Late Show were put together when there was a lot more money going around, and until Bill Carter writes a book that says otherwise, replacing the hosts was a budget driven process. There were good reasons for CBS to keep Colbert in the Ed Sullivan Theater, but I would not have been surprised if they found him or built for him a more modest studio designed for TV rather than a repurposed Broadway theater. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
