Maybe I'm high on paint fumes, but I recommend Marc Maron's interview with
Kathy Griffin. I still find her annoying in many ways, but the interview
explains why she chose the annoying route (long story short, the crap was
offered to her, the good stuff wasn't, so she took the crap). It is, to me,
a lesson in Hollywood morality. Maron once considered himself such a
failure (addict, divorced, career in the toilet) that the temptation to
sell out must have been nearly overwhelming, Instead, he started bitching
about life in his garage, doing it his way, and reinvented himself at 50
(his IFC series was just renewed for a third season, by the way). By
contrast, Griffin (who stated on the WTF podcast that her dream TV series
would be Tom Snyder's old Tomorrow Show format) has taken reality TV gigs,
red carpet announcing gigs, and really anything else that's offered to her
because that's all that is offered to her. So one did it his way and
another did it everyone else's way.

If that isn't Hollywood in a nutshell, I don't know what is.
