In case you noticed: How soon does the audience start doing the "clap clap" to the part of the closing theme they play over the last bumper slide?
Since the opening theme has changed over the years, I assume that the closing theme is the last remnant of Howard Shore's days left on "SNL," outside of the fact that the band's instrumentation has remained intact for 40 years, even if the musicians haven't.
