I didn't watch - and in fact, had never heard of the Hollywood Film Awards
until CBS starting pushing them - so maybe it was explained during the
telecast. But are they giving out awards for films that were released in 2014
when 2014 still has a month and a half left?

The final word from Sharon Waxman of the Wrap, although it probably won't do
anything to stop the longer road to the Oscars:

CBS is so desperate to generate some kind of interest in this dog that it
is pimping the kind of clip it usually would be suing to keep off the internet.
They want people to tune in next year because it is "even more unpredictable
than the Golden Globes!" even though what could be more predictable than Johnny
Depp phoning in an award presentation drunk off his ass?

Going by the adage that live TV is the only sure thing these days, CBS
bought the rights to the Hollywood Film Awards ceremony and televised it Friday
night for the first time (despite its sketchy history and the fact that the
wife of the awards' founder was one of the "Barker's Beauties" who sued CBS and
Fremantle over being fired from "The Price is Right" when Bob Barker was still
hosting)--the Eye was in the unaccustomed place of tied for last in the money
demo ratings (with its semi-sister network The CW):

According to Deadline's not-particularly-reliable quote whore Pete
Hammond, CBS has a three-year deal for the telecast and is getting a license
fee from dick clark productions (and perhaps dcp sold some of the national
advertising instead of the network), but one would think (if this is true) that
they are rethinking things, even if Les Moonves told Hammond Friday night that
one has to remember how difficult it was for the Golden Globes (another
kudofest with a checkered history) to become a television fixture. Meanwhile,
enjoy the highlight of the evening, Johnny Depp on something (posted on YouTube
by CBS [!]):
