Setting aside my belief that what he says about what he does isn't of any import to anyone except a fact-checker on his autobiography, NBC has nobody in line to replace Williams, all other NBC "talent" is at least five years away from being close to ready to anchor the Nightly News, and I don't see anybody else at any other network that NBC could pluck to fill the role. NBC wants this process of villifying Williams to take as long as possible to give them time to plan a next move... they will throw Williams to the wolves if they think it means it will preserve the rest of the news division. Problem is, as CBS learned when Rather departed and ABC learned when Jennings passed away, the days of smooth transitions are gone. For that matter, the days of trusted journalists are gone. So NBC has to leave Williams twisting in the proverbial wind, gagged and hidden away, while they scramble to fix the division as a whole (or, more accurately, scramble to make it look like they are fixing the news division).
