going back to when a former friend of mine was interviewed by him during
Obama's first presidential campaign (long story for another day), but
seeing how executives make decisions in the industry, that we don't
recognize his credibility as a journalist matters less to them than him
being a known on-air personality (and he's both African-American and
homosexual, which NBC could shamelessly promote). I concede my point of
view is cynical but also grounded in the reality of the age in which we
live where being a journalist is not the primary consideration for
anchoring a network newscast. Just as CBS hired Connie Chung 20 years ago
and Katie Couric a few years ago to make a big show of their news division
not being a bunch of stuffy old white dudes, if Williams is gone (and I
again state he shouldn't be let go for the current controversy), NBC will
feel compelled to make his replacement a dramatic change, and in their
myopic point of view, going with a gay black man regardless of his level of
respect as a journalist would get the job done.
