Because I don't recall the 2004 episode that Trump hosted, I was wondering if
anyone with firsthand viewing of both would compare the two.
I certainly don't recall any controversy of his hosting back then. Of course,
no Presidential run, and his stupid, nonsensical BS was restricted to his
'reality program.'
But he had to have been a hack back then, right?

Subject: [TV orNotTV] Trump SNL
No surprise how unfunny this was, both because of the state of SNL and the
frayed, overexposed status of Trump's thin, even if broad, appeal. Larry David
continues to kill with his Bernie Sanders and Che had a good moment on Update,
but it seemed that they were being almost intentionally un-funny with most of
the rest of it. I think they probably pack the audience with supporters when
they have politicians on (or, perhaps supporters just go to great lengths to
get tickets), but even the large part of the studio audience that wanted to
laugh seemed not to know when they were supposed to laugh, it was that hard to
figure out where the jokes were. Trump's daughter did a walk-on, and I am
pretty sure most people did not know who she was, or that it was supposed to
get a reaction of some kind.
Then it hit me - was it possible that the writers really were intentionally
tanking the show, as their own protest at being forced to use Trump? I am sure
this will be a big ratings winner for NBC, but it had to make most of the cast
and crew feel dirty - not because he is politically controversial, but because
Trump himself is just such a hack.
