That is an interesting but somewhat disjointed interview with Platt. I did not follow the production of this very closely - were there really two separate performances for each Coast? I think I may have argued once that they could do that, but it seems unlikely they did one show from 4:00 to 7:00 (LA time) and turned around and did another from 7:00 to 10:00. The reason I ask is they mention there was an audio glitch on the east coast performance, that was apparently fixed for the west coast. Assuming we saw a tape replay out here, what would have happened to fix that kind of problem for us? Would they have done something like splice in tape with corrected audio in the appropriate spot (translate that to the digital equivalent I guess) or is it more complicated than that?
I expected to either FF or turn the thing off after the first couple of musical numbers, but found myself charmed by the energy and enthusiasm of the production. I do find it hard to believe that the really selling point to Platt was the quality of the material. The only actor I recognized was Anna G playing the Principle, but I did read that Vanessa H was in the show, a name I vaguely recognized from when my daughters were in high school, and that her father had died. I agree that she easily gave the best performance in the show, but in my experience, when this play is done at its best, the comment everyone always makes is that the actor who played Rizzo stole the show. The play is structured like that - the two apparently lead roles are vapid and boring, and Rizzo has not just sex appeal and brashness, but works at several levels. Any competent actor in that role will always steal the show, as VH did.
