The comic may be problematic through some lenses, but your description leaves out the long list of awards it won at the time and the fact that many critics still list it as one of the best and most influential Batman stories of all time. I think the main knock against it these days is that it's success helped usher in a very dark and gritty era of comics, most of which weren't nearly as good.
