I don't disagree with your assessment at all from a current day point of view, and I'm glad people are now recognizing the problematic parts of the story. I just think it is revisionist history to imply that it was "widely" criticized at the time or that feminists spoke out against it in significant numbers. I worked in a comic book store through most of the 90's and regularly attended comic conventions and the praise for The Killing Joke was nearly universal at the time.
