So after their shameful approach to broadcasting the men's team gymnastics
events, NBC took a higher road for the men's all around. Even though it was
clear early that no American would be threatening for a medal, they stayed
with the entire event in prime time, and did a pretty good job of telling
the main stories even though they focused on non-Americans. FOr Week 1 at
least (not sure how Track and Field will play out) I suspect this was the
most sustained prime time NBC will devote to a non-US story. Though I
should say they did also spend a good amount of time on diving earlier this
week with to US competitors.

One story they touched on but still did not really explain was why in the
team event the Ukranian team only sent 2 of 3 gymnasts up to compete. Their
star, Oleg Verniaiev, said it was because their third went to the hospital
at the last minute and was medically unable to perform, and it was too late
to substitute. But NBC had said at the time (I can't remember now if this
was on the main prime time coverage, or on the Internet coverage) that they
could have put up a substitute. I found some reports on the Internet that
the Uranians were staging some kind of protest, or maybe they were trying
to conserve energy for the later events (but this seems unlikely to me,
since their main star did compete in the team competition).
