I did recognize who the wise man was; I wondered if Wilmore did. Also, I really liked Stewart's benediction for Wilmore, which was heartfelt and had the benefit of being accurate and true (at one point he said something like "you guys got better every single day" - which I thought was true from about month 4 or 5 on).
But it did make me think that, should Stewart be called on to say goodbye to Noah in six or nine months after he gets cancelled for low ratings, he would have much less to say that would be both complimentary and true. Noah's TDS almost always leaves me feeling unsatisfied. Frequently there are pieces that I appreciate (I liked Klepper's piece last night, though I kind of feel like we have seen a variation on that about 5 times in the last six months) but Noah himself consistently underwhelms. While he seems talented, he also comes across to me as insincere and uninformed - A year into his tenure and much of his show still feels to me like he is reading material written for Jon Stewart, that he does not really understand. He said he was going to change the show up, and he specifically noted that he would get away from skewering cable news as done on CNN and especially Fox. It does seem that he has lived up to that promise for the most part (which left him sadly poorly positioned to comment on the Roger Ailes situation), but I don't really know what he is trying to do.
