McGraw is still very much on the air, with Dr. Phil just starting its 15th
season.
There are engineering licenses in the United States, both general and
field-specific. Not all fields of engineering have licenses. As with most
licenses in the U.S., the requirements and credentials vary from state to
state. If you see mention of a professional engineer (PE) in the States, that
almost always means someone who is licensed. But my (limited) experience
suggests these licenses don't have much impact in the lay public unless they
are contracting with an engineer. Engineers can be called such if they have an
engineering degree, a license, and/or a job title with engineer in it.

That is interesting- I wonder if the difference is due to discipline or
country? In the US, a person who earns their JD is a lawyer, whether or not
they have passed the bar and are able to practice law. SImilarly, someone who
earns their MD is a doctor, even before they pass the licensing exam (similarly
with Psychology).
This does create the kind of confusion we have had here - McGraw can accurately
present himself as "Doctor", leading his TV audience to think he is a licensed
professional (the small print scrolling quickly after this show explains (does
he still have a show on the air?) that he is not licensed, and is only an
entertainer, but of course few notice this.
I should note an informal but important caveat: In many (most?) teaching
hospitals, the term "Doctor" is used by and around patients to refer to the
role and function, not the degree. So a 4th year medical student doing a
clinical rotation, who has not yet earned their degree, is usually referred to
as "Doctor" by both patients and nurses (at least when the latter are in the
presence of patients). This no doubt it in the service of the ongoing
mystification of patients, so that they ascribe god-like powers to anyone
treating them.

That's in interesting Dr thing. In the Engineering profession (at least in
Ontario Canada) you can only be called/marketed/represent an Engineer if you
are licensed. An education is one of the pre-req's of licensing. My son
graduated engineering ~2 years ago and is still working on his required "4
years of professional experience" towards licensing. He can only represent
himself as an EIT (Engineer In Training, I think).
I'm not familiar with the US/state regulations.
Bringing this back to Dr...... a person with a PhD in Engineering gets to be
called Dr. Engineer. That's not me.

He never had a medical license - he had a psychology license (he is a clinical

license.
Technically, being a "doctor" is a function of education and degree earned
(medical or academic), whether or not one has a license.

I thought he voluntarily forfeited his medical license to get out of the
multiple lawsuits against him by guests of his talk show? Or does he get to
keep the title in spite of being an inept quack?
