As expected, the season ending Giants-Dodgers series this weekend at AT&T
was fabulous. The fans gave the long time voice of our hated rivals a
standing ovation before the game, holding up thank-you signs at him. The
Giants let him do one whole inning on their local cablecast, and did a Cubs
style sing along of Take Me Out To The Ballgame in his honor. (And of
course, the Giants swept the Dodgers, earning the second Wildcard position,
and kept alive our dream of a 4th straight even-year World Series
championship).

I forgot what it was like to hear Vin do an inning of a game; I remembered
of course that he worked along, but forgot the virtuosity of his ability to
tell a rich and complex story, in a leisurely and folks manner, all the
while punctuating it with the call of the game. Such a pleasure.

I regard my opportunity to grow up listening to the two best sports
announcers in the history of the game (Vin and Lakers play by play man
Chick Hearn) to have been a real blessing (not to mention Dick Enberg, who
did Angels and Rams games).

Here is a LAT story that describes Vin's last game well:
