I'm sure other no talent hacks have said it as well, but Kelly said that the reason she took the NBC offer, over other cable and broadcast offers, and an offer to re-up at Fox for more money, was that NBC did not pitch a particular kind of role or slot to her, and basically said "we will let you do whatever you want". She has young school age children, so at this point she says her preference is a morning show that allows her to get her kids off to school, and be home when school is over (that sounds more like a 10:00 am slot at the latest than a 9:00 am slot, unless she is going to role like Jackie Gleason and show up 30 minutes before the show starts every day).
The theory here is that NBC gives MK a post-Today morning slot, both to let her spend that time with her kids and to allow NBC viewers fall in love with her. Then, at some undetermined time in the future (maybe a year or two, certainly before the next presidential election) they slide her in to the Today Co-host role.
