Years of watching TV detective shows has taught me that the "why"... the
intent... is always the hardest thing to prove. Your theory about hoping
for a ratings boost (due to the curiosity factor) might be valid. I suspect
if there is any sort of kindred feelings, it is merely that Maher has felt
persecuted in the past for saying unpopular (offensive) things, and he
wants to stand by others who also speak unpopular opinions and face
backlash. What seems to be impossible for Maher to accept, and again the
parallel between he and Trump is clear, is there is a difference between an
unpopular view backed up by evidence versus an unpopular view based on
nothing at all... or worse, based on a very narrow frame of reference.

I sometimes stumble upon someone on Twitter, a college professor at a major
university who believes gay people should not be parents. His singular
reasoning for this is that he was raised in a dysfunctional home by two
lesbians. He had a bad experience; therefore all children of gay parents
must have bad experiences. You cannot point out there are multitudes of
dysfunctional heterosexual households to him, because he won't see anything
beyond his own perspective. Granted, he is an extreme example, but Maher
and Milo are also extremists. Maher was pulled from ABC because of
controversial things said on his old show -- the White House spokesman at
the time called him out by name -- I couldn't begin to understand the
impact that would have on a person, but it clearly hardened Maher. When his
anti-Islamic views got him dropped from speaking at Berkeley last year, it
clearly pissed him off further. So now, like Trump, he plays the victim
when he isn't one at all. Milo does the same thing; he verbally attacks
people, and when people react to him, he plays it as if their reactions
were unprovoked and he's merely, to borrow a phrase, telling it like it is.

So now they come together, as do so many other idiots that Maher provides
airtime to. I've said before here and elsewhere, everyone is NOT entitled
to their opinion; everyone is entitled to their INFORMED opinion. I've
known too many Muslims to consider them "the enemy." I've known too many
gays, blacks, Christians, and atheists to consider them enemies, either.
Ignorance is an enemy. Fear is an enemy. Anger is an enemy. Hatred is an
enemy. Maher and Milo (and Trump) thrive on ignorance, fear, anger, and
hatred. That's what Americans are now fighting against, whether they know
it or not.
