TVBTN is wrong when they say that this basic pattern (that Fallon has lost
more than Colbert has gained) has gone un-noticed. I have seen several of
the rash of stories over the last few weeks on this topic note just this,
and it has been noted here as well.

It looks like two things are happening simultaneously - the late night
audience is shrinking (a little faster than the long term decline over the
last couple of decades) and Colbert is getting a larger share of the late
night audience that is left. Colbert seems not to have suffered the about
4% general loss the other two have, plus he has taken some audience from
Fallon.

As we have discussed a lot, much of this is because of the greater
relevance of Colbert's harder edge political satire. But I think there is
another additional explanation. Fallon's appeal has been in large part on
his focus on "viral content". Over time though, it would not be surprising
if a percentage of the audience that mostly likes those viral components
easily digested a day or even a week later online realize they don't have
to suffer through the entire show, and do other things at 11:35. A higher
percentage of Colbert's audience is likely to perceive that they have to
actually watch the show to get the optimal experience. This would only make
a difference on the margins, as the core audience of all three shows is
still watching most of the show live or recorded - but then we are talking
about those marginal differences.
