Using math and stats to try to determine which shows will work isn't a new concept. And as with everything from new product releases and presidential elections, the results are not guaranteed. Netflix has produced series that did not go viral, so the new algorithms are not perfect. Ultimately, "House of Cards" proved Netflix is a player in the game, but they have yet to win the game. Some degree of longevity would need to exist to determine its overall impact on the media landscape. Think how many years the Fox network was derided, including by me (I still contend that absent three hours of nightly programming, its own daily newscast, and some sort of solid daytime and late night lineup, they aren't in the same league as NBC, ABC, or CBS, but I digress). As with any online media venture, there is always a lot of startup investment made, but even years of success doesn't guarantee anything (Netscape, Napster, MySpace, AOL, MapQuest... heck Club Penguin just folded). Will Netflix still exist a decade from now?
