Technical skills means doing good prep work during the week before the game. Early in the week you watch the last couple of games each team has played and note some tendencies which are developing - maybe the quarterback is developing confidence in a young tight end or the offense only runs rushing plays to the left because they are not working to the right. Then you get to the city where the game will be played on Friday or Saturday and meet with the coaches and you want to have good questions to ask based on what you have seen. If you are an ex-player you may have some other connections on one or both teams like a former college or pro teammate who is now a player or position coach on one of the teams. Then when it comes to game time you can recognize subtle things happening on the field and report them. The problem with Simms is, I think, the same problem that came up with Tim McCarver and John Madden. They have done high profile games for so many years that viewers have heard all of their stories and kind of already know their insight without hearing what they have to say. The networks know that the announce teams are the face of the network and they want a sense of stability so they do not want to change announcers often. As a result some color analysts wear out their welcome. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
