I assume Simms's contract pays him more than a lower team's booth analyst
or studio host. If CBS decides to go that way they have to know it will sow
dissension among new colleagues, especially when it's time for them to
negotiate new contracts. If he leaves CBS they can trigger a non-compete
clause, but they might waive it in return for him agreeing to tear up the
remaining two years.

As to Romo retiring, I remember Brett Favre coming on the Letterman Late
Show after he announced his retirement. Dave asked him if retired from the
NFL and he said yes, and then Dave asked him if he filed his papers. He
laughed and didn't answer. Later he came back to play. I'm assuming the
same for Romo - he hasn't filed his papers yet. But he would only come back
as a starter (if he was willing to be a backup he could probably find a
team now) and probably only for a contender. Those teams are in no hurry to
sign him.
