In the 1990s there was a concern among sociologists and psychologists of
the effects of having people air their private affairs on TV for
entertainment. The venue then was daytime talk shows, which following
Springer's success, were going through an expansion which meant always
finding more outrageous guests to stand out. As the authorities stood by
then they are not going to get involved now.

I watched two reality TV competitions in the 17 years since Survivor
debuted. Both, which were Mark Burnett productions, emphasized soap opera
elements in the competitions even when the elements were trivial.
