Darnell is now running the reality arm of Warner Bros. So far, besides
keeping Mark Burnett and NBC happy with "The Voice" (which is actually
owned by a company now owned by the UK's' ITV) and ABC happy with "The
Bachelor" franchise, he's tried a flashy hard quiz show with Burnett ("500
Questions"), Ellen DeGeneres' brand extensions of her talk show (her new
NBC game show and Steve Harvey's "Little Big Shots," which is based on an
Ellen segment), the reboot of Warners property in North America "Whose
Line?" (and I'm surprised that no one hasn't tried to swallow up Hat Trick,
which seems to be able to do both scripted and unscripted successfully) and
the reboot of Warners property everywhere in the world "Love Connection."
Which means he has about as much of a clue of what to do with unscripted
as anybody else. And I still can't figure out why Burnett in his current
role as boss of MGM TV is sitting on the Heatter-Quigley game show formats
and not doing anything with them, since I think that some of the shows
could still be viable formats. It's almost as though because their most
successful format ("Hollywood Squares") is owned by CBS, he's thinking to
hell with it. (And with our luck, he'd probably pick "The Magnificent
Marble Machine" as worthy of revival.)
