One of the sites I read on a daily basis (io9, I think) did a breakdown of the Discovery upfront trailer, and it looks like the ship & uniforms we see are primarily from a 24th century (post-TNG era) ship, not from the USS Discovery, so that would explain some of the production design choices. As for the design of the Klingon makeup...I got nothing for that.
