I am not really seeing this argument very clearly. I don't think
NBC/Kelly's problem has to do with anything fundamentally new or different
about the internet, and more with dealing with fundamentally sleazy people
and systems. Before there was the Internet there was tabloid print media,
and the National Enquirer and its kind were able on occasion to push
mainstream journalism to cover salacious crap just because so many people
were talking about it.

Kelly's "mistake" essentially was trying to use Jone's online following to
boost her ratings (I put mistake in quotes because I will not be shocked if
after all this it turns out to pay off with big ratings, though I will not
be watching it). It was also, as I noted when it first came out, that she
interviewed him so long before airing it (I still have not heard what the
reasoning behind this was - though I wonder now if it was specifically so
they could tease it, gauge the public reaction, and then edit it
accordingly).
