He got a little loopy in his declining years, with his comments about unfunny women and such. I'd like to believe that was all the drugs he was whacked out on, but who knows.
I worked on the telethon one year, and it was the closest I'll likely ever get to the Gong Show, with plate spinners and clowns and "middle" comics and mimes. I was able to exchange a few words with him, but no real conversations (I spoke with Ed McMahon more than Lewis). If I am in a certain mindset, I can laugh out loud at his comedy, but if I'm honest it isn't something I typically seek out.
