I think he got a lot loopy, and a lot earlier than his declining year (or maybe, I think his declining years began several decades ago). As a kid I would watch the Telethon every year, mostly because in the day there was almost nothing on TV overnight, and my mother would let me stay up as long as I could. But even in my pre-teen years I was off put by the way he treated and portrayed people with disabilities. I got a kick out of the B and C and D list celebrities though. I was not of the right generation to get into his stuff with Martin, though my mother (of all people, not really what I ever thought was her cup of tea) swore by them. And I never really got most of his singleton stuff. Exception -as Kevin notes, The Errand Boy - the Count Basie part alone of which is a real treat. And, of course King of Comedy.
Still, all in all, the loss of one of the last remaining true links to old school entertainment.
