I watched yearly as a kid, suffering through hours of John Davidson, Connie Frances, Vic Damone and the like to see someone I actually liked. One year they kept teasing that a comedian I liked was coming up next. I think it was Charlie Callas. That went in for hours. I finally went to bed. He came on the next morning. I admit I never caught on to the exploitation of the kids until I was an adult. But I did remember him saying repeatedly over the years that a break through was close and if they could just get enough money this year they would have it.
