Having watched the first two episodes on Netflix last night (it's home in
the rest of the world I believe), I wasn't so down on continuity as Kevin.
Going forward with something like Trek is much easier than going backwards.
TOS was a future from a sixties perspective, and you can't really do that
in 2017.

My main criticism was the with the structure of the opening. Having not
really read or seen much about Discovery, I didn't really know where they'd
go with it. But it felt like the Klingon scenes were drawn out and slow,
while the Federation scenes were bitty and jumped all over the place.
Really odd. And it's fairly clear that the whole thing is going to
essentially reset from the next episode(s).

I also have a personal dislike of plot points built around mutinous
characters. See, for example, just about any film set on a submarine. If
you based your knowledge of US armed forces on TV and films alone, you'd
think that they were the most ill-disciplined services in the world!

The make-up and effects were both excellent, and while the dialogue was
clunky in places, set-up episodes are hard to do, so I'll give them a pass
until they get properly into their stride.

It seems pretty clear that this Trek is going to be more serialised than
most, so we'll see how it goes. I'm certainly intrigued enough to want to
see where it's going. Will it settle down into alien planet of the week or
really follow a heavily serialised structure as opposed to having a series
arc?

I think this must be the first "premium" drama I've watched for a while
that had such clear commercial act-breaks, and an opening title sequence
that has series regulars who, er, we've not actually seen yet. I'm so used
to the new way of only listing actors actually in an episode (e.g. Game of
Thrones), and not having such clunky cliff-hangers mid-action.

Incidentally, Netflix also had the CBS All Access "After Trek" available. I
had to bail on that very quickly. Just unwatchable.
