WTF? https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/29/business/media/nbc-matt-lauer.html
I just got home from work and saw Rachel’s coverage of this, and then read the above NYT story. When I got up this morning the allegations of misbehavior were vague (I now hear they concern behavior that began while ML was covering the Sochi Olympics). But the allegations that were being investigated by the NYT, and that now have apparently been officially reported to NBC HR, are horrific - and include more unwanted live Dick exposures (and really, can there be any other kind of live Dick exposure?) plus an episode of brutal rape, in which Lauer is accused of asking a female colleague to take off her blouse and expose her breasts (which she did), and then he locked his office door (with some magic desk button), pulled down her pants, bent her over his desk and penetrated her from behind. She says she passed out half way through, and later had to be taken to the hospital. JESUS CHRIST I hope at the very least this story helps us bein to make some basic distinctions in the realm of sexual misbehavior. Al Franken’s alleged misbehavior is bad, but not in the same area code as Louie CK, which is not in the same time zone as Matt Lauer and Donald Trump. I am also thinking we have to be more careful with the actions taken in light of these accusations. Innocent until proven guilty applies in cases of civil or criminal court; and in the court of public opinion people are free to make up thieir mind based on whatever. But firing people from their job’s has to be somewhere in between those two. I am going to assume that in cases like Lauer and Rose, the employer talked to the employee, who either admitted enough of the substance of the allegations to justify immediate termination, or were unable to provide a reasonable or convincing denial. I don’t want to sound like Donald Trump, but I do think that if the accused strongly denies the charges, and is able to provide some plausible explanation, that people in most kinds of jobs deserve a little more due process before just being summarily fired (maybe a suspension pending further investigation). In Matt Lauer’s case, depending on what the statue of limitations issues are, I would expect we should see a criminal investigation and possible trial.
