'A Prairie Home Companion' name becomes 'Live from Here'
NEW YORK (AP) - "A Prairie Home Companion" has been given a new name - "Live
from Here" - in the wake of creator Garrison Keillor's acrimonious split with
Minnesota Public Radio. Chris Thile, the mandolin virtuoso who has hosted the
weekly variety show since Keillor's retirement last year, announced the new
name Saturday evening as the show opened a live performance in New York City.
MPR terminated its contracts with Keillor after it said it had received
multiple allegations of improper conduct by Keillor. MPR has declined to give
any details except to say the allegations involved treatment of one woman who
had worked with Keillor when he was still with the show. Keillor has said he
accidentally touched a woman's bare back while trying to console her.

MPR's web site schedule (for the News network--MPR has three networks--News,
Classical and the Current adult alternative rock--and "PHC" is heard on News
and Classical) has the new title as "The Chris Thile Show."  APM's syndication
site still has it as "PHC."  So does WNYC in NY, but WBEZ in Chicago lists it
as "Chris Thile."  Surprisingly, APM-operated (owned by Pasadena City College)
KPCC in LA still has it as "PHC," as does KQED in SF, WGBH in Boston, WAMU in
DC and KUOW in Seattle (which uses the standard site infrastructure that a lot
of public radio stations use).  But it seems highly possible that it will be
"The Chris Thile Show" for now.

Nothing makes sense anymore. Wow.
I've been a huge, HUGE fan of Keillor's since PHC started airing nationally in
the early eighties. But after what's happened in the past few weeks, I guess
nothing should surprise me anymore. I'm pretty much numb now.

Though I'm tempted to say that the news was broken by the Lake Wobegon Herald
Star (and its publisher, Harold Star).

One interesting section of MPR's press release:

By terminating the contracts, MPR and American Public Media (APM) will:

* end distribution and broadcast of The Writer's Almanac and rebroadcasts of
The Best of A Prairie Home Companion hosted by Garrison Keillor;

* change the name of APM's weekly music and variety program hosted by Chris
Thile; and,

* separate from the Pretty Good Goods online catalog and the PrairieHome.org
website.

Thile's version of PHC has a live episode (from Town Hall in New York) coming
up on Saturday. They better change the name of that show soon.
