I will never understand the politics running in the background of the Stargate franchise.
- The network airing the series (SciFy/Syfy) shows no faith in the first spin-off series (Atlantis) despite its popularity with the fanbase, cancels it, but then orders a spinoff that could best be defined as "BSG, but in the Stargate continuity" - then cancels THAT series after 2 seasons, just as the writers are figuring things out. - The studio basically ignores fans for a decade - The creative team behind the original film (Devlin & Emmerich) can't cope with the fact that the TV series have long since outshined their film (both in terms of storytelling and fan support), decide to announce a sequel to said film which ignores SG-1, Atlantis and SG:U and 'picks up where the original film leaves off' - Now, we have the studio (MGM) giving us a prequel series no one asked for. As a fan of the Stargate series (but mostly SG-1 and Atlantis), I know I never asked "I wonder how the Langfords found the gate in the 30s?" SG-1 provides enough backstory that it makes sense without needing the gaps filled in. I don't want a prequel. I want to know what the SG teams are doing in '2018'. I want to know what the Milky Way looks like after the Ori war. I want to know if Atlantis is still parked in San Francisco bay, or if Rodney McKay ever got it to fly again. I want to know if the Pegasus galaxy faced a foe worse than the Wraith. What's life like on board the Daedalus? Give me that and I'll be a happy fan.
