My feelings about the tram are not as strong as Kevin's but my memories of
the spot are strong. In high school it was a favored make out spot for me
and a gf. I think that must have been before the sign came back into vogue;
we could be up there for a long time and never get interrupted. I don’t
recall the walk as being strenuous (but I had other things on my mind).

Maybe they should have the Visitors Center at the origin, and just have a
gondola ride that takes people up for a close view but does not let people
get out?
