I can confirm that in British-English "fag" is a harmless word. Yes, it's
also an offensive term for a gay man, but the two are unrelated. See also
near enough every episode of Eastenders that has ever aired (at least until
mentions of cigarettes was completely forbidden). For the record, it's also
a word that can refer to a younger child at a boarding school who is made
to run around doing the tasks of an older boy.
