I'm a big fan too, despite its failings. I found the characters really
winning, which carried it when the subject matter got repetitive.
I avoided it during its first few years, because I knew it came from the
guy who gave us the infantile "Two and a Half Men." And the original promos
- all showing the nerdy guys lusting after the hot blonde - indicated it
would be more of the same.
But by the time I started watching, roughly halfway through the run, the
show - and the characters - had grown up a lot. (Especially Howard, who is
almost nothing like his original incarnation.) And while I don't identify
with any of the characters, I have a brainy friend who totally identifies
with Amy.
There's a warmth to the characters and their relationships, plus an overall
sweetness, that makes the show addictive.
