I would hope HBO or Comedy Central will pick up the slack and produce an event to raise money for journalism scholarships that focuses on comics who joke about politicians and the media to their faces. Both groups need to be roasted in person. And more money needs to be given to a charities that give to institutions that teach genuine journalism skills.
The WHCA is not a group of journalists anymore; not sure they ever were, which is part of the problem. Dreaming big, I’d like to see somebody step up not to just raise money for student journalists, but to open a journalism school. Dreaming bigger, the school campus should be on the National Mall, and the building’s exterior should be mirrored so it reflects the White House and the Capital. Politicians should fear the power of the school’s graduates, and the public should respect them.
