Sam Bee came close-ish with 2017's Not The White House Correspondents' Dinner.
They raised money for the Committee to Protect Journalists and most of the
people (all?) roasted were not in attendance.

I assume that the Radio and TV Presenters Dinner has not suffered from most of
this nonsense, in part due to it getting next to no attention.
The notion that WHCA was ever a proper nerd prom irritated me endlessly, and I
would hope this leads to an end to all of the associated horse crap (red
carpet, afterparties, etc.)

I would hope HBO or Comedy Central will pick up the slack and produce an event
to raise money for journalism scholarships that focuses on comics who joke
about politicians and the media to their faces. Both groups need to be roasted
in person. And more money needs to be given to a charities that give to
institutions that teach genuine journalism skills.
The WHCA is not a group of journalists anymore; not sure they ever were, which
is part of the problem. Dreaming big, I’d like to see somebody step up not to
just raise money for student journalists, but to open a journalism school.
Dreaming bigger, the school campus should be on the National Mall, and the
building’s exterior should be mirrored so it reflects the White House and the
Capital. Politicians should fear the power of the school’s graduates, and the
public should respect them.

Granted the whole thing feels unnecessary and like a charade any more. At the
upcoming dinner the guest will be Ron Chernow.
