I don’t think that is fair. Todd is not good, but he is much less bad than
Russert.

Also, let’s not lose the main point here (a danger with Steve’s comment
about Brokaw frequently guesting on Dave). The claim is not that Brokaw is
a bad journalist. I don’t think he’s nearly as praiseworthy as his late
career reputation, but I have followed him closely since his days anchoring
the local news in Los Angeles with Jess Marlow when I was a kid, through
his work as WH correspondent and Today Show host, and judge him to be above
average in these roles. The claim is not even that his bigoted recent
remarks on MTP somehow disqualify him from further work as a TV journalist.
“Old white guy says something racist about Hispanics on TV” is about as
“dog bites man” as it gets. The point is that what he said is both bigoted
(specifically partaking of a brand of anti- Hispanic bigotry that
flourished in Southern California in the 70s and 80s, the kind that fueled
the “make English the National language law” movement, and that ultimately
led to the functional end of the Republican Party in California), and
demonstrably incorrect (as was made clear yesterday, 99% of the
grandchildren of immigrants from Spanish speaking countries speak English,
and many are no longer comfortable in Spanish). Brokaw still has not
apologized or acknowledged he was wrong.
