I’m not sure if I have watched a single show on the CW, but I have some interest in this. I notice first that while my perception that CW programs for teens and YAs is correct, the average CW viewer is 58. The article says this helps explain why they still operate in the Red, and that this is going to change under new regime.
It sounds like the plan is to use CW to extend the reach of NewsNation and the younger Cuomo, and that after this programming year CW will transition to cheaper, unscripted programming, presumably targeting the older viewers who still watch news on television. Since that plan sounds similar to WBD’s approach, and would conflict with CNN, it seems likely Discovery at least will be out of the CW business entirely as soon as possible. And while WBD did not get any cash for its share of CW so far, being able to get some of that debt off their books is as good or better than cash for them.
